Bolivia is a poor country with a history of oppression and exploitation. Today, 40% of the population lives on less than ten kronors (10SEK) per day and many have no access to clean water or healthcare. Bolivia has large reserves of natural resources but is in constant serious conflict over their control.
A large proportion of the population is Indian, who struggle both to fight for their civil rights and preserve their own culture. Since January 2009, Bolivia has had a new constitution that protects the rights of Indians in a way that is unprecedented in history. Many groups are struggling to actually implement the changes prescribed by the law, but it is an ongoing and arduous process.
