In India, poverty, social injustice, degradation of soil and water are huge problems, even though a portion of the population saw an improvement in their situation due to the great economic growth that the country experienced during the last decade. But with a population that has tripled from about 350 million in 1950 to about 1200 million today, there are many mouths to feed, and at least 300 million are extremely poor. Discrimination against women and untouchables complicates situation for the poor.
Large areas of land are becoming man-made desert due to deforestation. The land can no longer sustain agriculture, forcing the rural people to travel to cities in search of work. However, organic and biodynamic farming are becoming more popular, and there are positive examples of rehabilitated destroyed land and restored water to dried up wells.
