Novalisinstitutet i Kapstaden har nu jobbat drygt ett år med övergivna barn

Novalisinstitutet samarbetar med fyra barnhem, med en grupp mormödrar/farmödrar som tar hand om sina barnbarn samt med en frivillig grupp som hjälper aidssjuka.
Man försöker förbättra situationen för de föräldralösa eller övergivna barnen genom att jobba med konst, biografiarbete, odling och hantverk. Man samverkar också med organisationer som jobbar direkt med frågor kring könsroller och sexualitet.
Novalisinstitutet ger stöd till "the careworkers" på olika sätt, samt jobbar direkt med barnhemmens tonåringar och skolbarn. Konstnärliga och praktiska aktiviteter där flickor och pojkar kan delta på lika villkor är ett viktigt inslag.

Barnens vädjan till de vuxna
I Novalisinstitutets halvårsrapport 2007 redogörs för en stor konferens för barnhemsmedarbetare. Samtidigt som konferensen pågick hölls också en workshop för barnhemsbarn. Citatet nedan berättar vad som hände när barnen och ungdomarna kom in till konferensen för de vuxna "careworkers":
"...at the end of the conference they presented their conclusions. This was the most moving and inspiring occasion. Their courage and determination in the face of severe adversity shone from their faces. Their plea for help and support from the adults served to make each person present feel that their work is of utmost importance.”

En konstnärlig dag för barnhemmens ungdomarNovalisinstitutets Mswandile Sangweni anordnade en workshop för tonåringarna från tre barnhem, för att de skulle få erfara olika konstnärliga aktiviteter och dessutom träffa varandra. Projektledaren Claire Barry beskriver hur det gick till:
"The adolescents were divided into 4 groups, each group had the chance to experience Drumming, Dance Drama and Art. The big bright Art work now hangs in my office with messages of Love, Peace, Hope, Sharing, and Hugs. They were a little shy at first but soon went into young exuberance. At the end of the day they could chose which Art they would like to present with and each group spoke about the meaning behind their presentation."

Odling väcker respekt för det levande
Dillion Meyers, som arbetar med trädgårdsodling, berättar att väldigt få av barnen vet att frön och plantor ger upphov till frukt och grönsaker. Det är inte heller självklart att barnhemmens medarbetare, s.k. "Mothers", tror att odling ska bli någon succé:
"Our approach was one of caution as we had been warned that the children were very destructive and would not allow anything to grow. The comment was "if you have any success with your project then God has come down from Heaven onto the earth." A week after planting the first seeds we received an unexpected telephone call from a Mother informing us that the children had very excitedly come to her, pulled her by the hand and invited her to the garden because “the seeds that were sleeping have woken up and were peeping from under the earth".

The seedlings have since been afforded the opportunity to grow unhindered and developed into plants leaving the adults of SOS Village amazed at the respect their children now show for plant, animal and insect life.”
